On May 11, Nature reported a milestone: China approved the world's first commercial brain-computer interface (BCI) device for treating paralysis. Scientific American, Reuters, Bloomberg, Fierce Biotech, and Smithsonian Magazine all followed up.
This is not a "China's Neuralink" story.
What happened
China's NMPA approved a device called NEO — a BCI implant for paralysis treatment. This marks the first time any regulator has approved a BCI device for commercial use, not clinical trials. Neuralink, by comparison, remains under the FDA's clinical trial framework.

Two technological paths
Neuralink uses intracortical implantation — electrodes inserted directly into brain tissue. High precision, but highly invasive.
China's NEO follows an endovascular route — electrodes are delivered through the jugular vein to brain blood vessels, sitting against the cortex without penetrating. Lower surgical risk, no craniotomy needed.
These are fundamentally different approaches, not directly comparable.

Signals of an accelerating field
China's BCI activity goes beyond this single approval. 36Kr reports that Chinese BCI companies raised 3.8 billion yuan in Q1 2026 — exceeding the entire 2025 total. Investment logic is shifting from "concept hype" to "industrialization expectations."
Meanwhile, Mass General Brigham and Brown University published research showing two paralyzed patients able to type thoughts using a BCI — published in Nature during the same week.
Smithsonian Magazine's headline captured it: "An Experimental Brain Implant Allows People With Paralysis to Type Their Thoughts With Their Minds."
Neuralink is also pushing forward. Elon Musk recently stated Neuralink plans high-volume BCI production by 2026.
