I. Why This Question Suddenly Matters More
The question "How do you tell if someone's thinking is above your own?" has been a perennial favorite on Chinese Q&A platform Zhihu. But in 2026, it carries a new subtext.
Because by now, LLMs have passed the bar exam, beaten doctors on medical licensing, and solved PhD-level mathematics. If "higher cognition" simply means "knowing more and reasoning better," then by 2026, an LLM has higher cognition than 99% of humans. And yet, none of us would say AI is "cognitively above" Einstein — even if it can recite every one of his papers.
The premise of the question is being rewritten: the criteria we used to judge cognitive superiority — knowledge breadth, logical agility, reaction speed — are precisely the things AI is now best at.

Before AI, the highest-voted answers to this question clustered around three criteria:

All three made sense in the pre-AI era. But in 2026, each has a blind spot:

So here's the question: if someone knows more than you, is better at admitting ignorance, has wider perspective, and grasps essence faster — and that someone is AI — would you say they are cognitively above you?
Most people's intuitive answer is "no." Why?
III. A Four-Layer Model of Cognition
My answer: Human cognition is not linear. It is layered. AI dominates the bottom layers; humans retain an edge in the upper layers — and the rules there are entirely different.

Layer 1: Knowledge Storage
The standard of the industrial age. The more someone read, experienced, and accumulated, the "higher" their cognition. In the pre-AI era, this was reasonable — knowledge itself was scarce.
In 2025, a $30/month subscription unlocks all of human civilization's knowledge. If you're still judging cognitive level by "how much this person knows," you're comparing horse speed in the age of trains.
Layer 2: Logical Processing
The standard of the information age. Who can analyze problems faster, build causal chains, identify logical fallacies, and think structurally.

Layer 3: Question Asking

To judge whether someone's thinking is above yours: don't look at how well they answer — look at whether they ask questions you never thought of, but that immediately strike you as "we should be asking that."
Example: In a business strategy meeting, everyone is focused on how to use AI to cut costs. The cognitively higher person doesn't join that discussion. Instead, they ask: "What if we use AI not to cut costs, but to create costs — to offer entirely new services that were previously too expensive to build?"

The highest layer. "What's worth asking" is a dimension above "how to ask."
AI can generate 100 relevant questions. But which one is the most important, right now, to pursue? This requires: ethical judgment, aesthetic preference, risk appetite, trade-offs between short and long term, understanding of impact on self and others — all things AI does not (yet) have.
The ultimate criteria for judging whether someone's thinking is above yours:
- What problems they choose to spend time on — this reveals their values
- Their tolerance for uncertainty — cognitively advanced people hold contradictory positions without needing binary answers
- Their decision quality when there is no correct answer — it's not about "what's right," it's about "how to frame the choice"

Cognitively advanced people share a trait: they can communicate downward — they re-frame a complex logic in someone else's knowledge framework.

Test Three: Are they comfortable saying "I don't know" — really?

When someone can calmly admit they are not even at the stage of "uncertainty" about something, it shows a clear perception of their own cognitive boundaries. That is genuine metacognition.

When AI has seized absolute dominance over the bottom two layers, the standard for judging cognitive level shifts from "how many questions can you answer" to "which questions do you choose to answer."

What remains, what cannot be replaced, what is worth using as the benchmark for "higher cognition," is a person's ability to identify which questions are important vs. unimportant — and the courage to act on that identification.
So how do you tell if someone's thinking is above yours?
They have given up doing what AI can do. They spend all their time on what AI cannot do. And you had never even considered that those things could be left undone.
