It wasn't a hack. It was an agent permission failure. McDermott used the moment to announce ServiceNow's AI Agent "Kill Switch" — an emergency brake mechanism.
This incident captures a central paradox of 2026: it is simultaneously the year AI agents move from demo to production at scale, and the year the governance crisis begins.
I. Money Is Flowing, But the Gap Remains
Gartner forecasts global agentic AI workload spending to exceed $9 billion in 2026. Global VC investment in Q1 2026 reached an estimated $300 billion — a pace that has led analysts to describe an "Agentic Infrastructure Super-Cycle."
Yet ServiceNow's data reveals an uncomfortable gap: 60% of enterprises have partially deployed agentic AI, but only 10% have built genuinely autonomous agents. Most organizations remain in a "Copilot-style" human-in-the-loop phase, far from unattended automation. By this measure, roughly 90% of the investment has not yet produced corresponding operational output.
