Harvard Warns, Others Echo — But Not Everyone Agrees
If your feed recently featured headlines like "Is AI Dulling Our Minds?" (Harvard Gazette), "Over-Reliance on AI May Harm Your Cognitive Ability" (ScienceAlert), or "Does AI Increase Cognitive Abilities or Decrease Them?" (Frontiers in Psychology), you're not alone in spotting the pattern.
Three independent studies, three different outlets, all pointing to the same concern: As we grow more comfortable letting AI think for us, are we losing our own ability to think?
This isn't a sci-fi opening. This is a question the academic community is seriously debating in May 2026.

Reporting directly under the title "Is AI Dulling Our Minds?", Harvard's flagship publication cited multiple cognitive scientists and psychologists. The core thesis: as AI tools take on an increasing share of cognitive tasks — from drafting emails to summarizing research papers — the human brain faces a "use it or lose it" risk. Laboratory data suggested a correlation between heavy AI-assisted workflows and diminished critical thinking.

Drawing on findings from multiple labs, the analysis operates on two levels:
- The online environment itself "exploits our cognitive tendencies" — making us more prone to shortcuts and shallow information processing
- AI accelerates this process: when AI summarizes for you, drafts for you, and even predicts how someone might reply, the neural circuits responsible for these functions weaken from disuse
The key insight: researchers draw a critical distinction between "offloading" (delegating cognitive tasks entirely to AI) and "scaffolding" (using AI as a cognitive support structure to augment your own thinking). Most users are doing the former — often without realizing it.

This peer-reviewed paper asks a more nuanced question: does AI increase or decrease cognitive abilities? The answer: it depends on who you are. Individual differences — cognitive style, self-regulation capacity — are the key moderating variables. Finding 1: The Problem Isn't AI — It's How You Use It

The difference between scaffolding and offloading is the difference between using AI to grow and using AI to replace yourself.
Finding 2: Correlation Exists — Causation Is Not Yet Proven
Current research can show that "heavy AI users perform differently on certain cognitive metrics," but it cannot yet prove that AI causes cognitive decline. It may be that people with weaker cognitive tendencies are simply more likely to choose AI substitutes for thinking. A Better Question to Ask
The question "Does AI make us dumber?" has a more useful version: "Is the way we're using AI training us to become better thinkers?"
One observation the Harvard article doesn't make explicitly: people who feel "AI is making me dumber" often aren't victims of AI doing something wrong. Rather, AI has revealed a cognitive laziness that was already there. In the pre-AI era, these individuals weren't thinking any deeper — there just wasn't a mirror showing them how shallow their thinking actually was.
